State Secretary Lindlohr and Mayor Mentrup visit the research centre
On 29 July 2024, Andrea Lindlohr (MdL), State Secretary in the Ministry for Regional Development and Housing, visited the Research Institute for Steel, Timber and Masonry. She was accompanied by the Mayor of Karlsruhe, Dr. Frank Mentrup and Karlsruhe's Member of Parliament, Alexander Salomon.
After a brief presentation of the research centre in the testing hall, which focused on the topics of "sustainable construction" and "resource efficiency", the guests toured our testing facilites gaining impression of its activities.
In the ensuing discussion, there was a consensus that, on the one hand, dismantling and the return of components to a circular economy must be taken into account during the construction of buildings. In addition, the reuse of entire structural elements, if possible without costly reworking, should be increasingly emphasised in the future. Corresponding solutions are currently being developed in several ongoing research projects at the research centre.
Furthermore, it is necessary to establish appropriate building regulations that regulate the reuse of construction products under building law, so that incentives are created for the reuse of construction products while maintaining safety levels. Here we were able to present our guests with the draft guideline for the reuse of structural elements from steel and timber, a project initiated by Ms Lindlohr and her team.
We would like to thank Ms Lindlohr, Dr Mentrup and Mr Salomon for their visit and look forward to continuing the dialogue that has begun.
